In 2007, James Watt and Martin Dickie founded BrewDog with the idea of bringing their own passion for great craft beer to others. And perhaps as a protest against the boring beers of their homeland. In April 2007, BrewDog came howling into the world in a godforsaken industrial area in northeast Scotland.

Brewdog itself reports being the largest independent brewery in Scotland. From the beginning, they have not financed themselves through bank loans, but through a participation model called “Equity for Punks,” a kind of crowdfunding. As a fan of the brewery, you could (and still can) buy shares in the brewery. In return, you get a lifetime discount on BrewDog beers, in keeping with the motto “Beer for Punks.” In the first 5 rounds, nearly 67 million pounds were collected from 95,000 people. With that money, Watt and Dickie started building a fancy, big, new brewery in Ellon, Scotland.

In the meantime, the brewery also operates its own bars worldwide.

James Watt and Martin Dickie have become businessmen at the helm of a multi-million dollar company. They are still punks at heart.
